Dean's Message

Dorcas E. McCoy, PhD
Welcome to the online home of the Bethune-Cookman University School of Social Sciences. We are very proud of our School and the varied quality programs we offer for the engaged learner.
The School of Social Sciences offers students the choice of seven academic majors: Criminal Justice, Gerontology, History, International Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Students may also elect to minor in any of the major areas of concentration. Discipline-specific field experiences and internships in local, state and national community agencies and organizations complement the educational process, giving students hands-on experience in the professional world.
We also encourage our students to consider graduate and professional study upon completion of their undergraduate degree. In support of this goal, we arrange trips to universities in Florida and beyond as well as host graduate forums to acquaint students with opportunities that are available to them. We also bring in B-CU alumni and other guest speakers to discuss cutting edge realities in their given fields. Many of our students elect to study abroad which is strongly encouraged.
The Model United Nations Program is one of the signature learning experiences in the School of Social Sciences. The program, established 28 years ago by Professor Emeritus, Dr. Jake C. Miller, is an excellent platform for students to hone their skills in speech, debate, diplomacy, critical thinking, expressive writing, and networking. Friendships and contacts formed during Model United Nations Programs often extend well beyond a student’s college years.
Major clubs and associations offer educational, informative and enriching experiences for all majors in the School of Social Sciences. A caring, concerned and highly credentialed faculty is always willing to meet with students, answer questions and do whatever is necessary to accommodate student needs and requirements.
If you have any questions about our programs, I am always available at (386) 481-2868 or e-mail mccoyd@cookman.edu.
Blessings unlimited,
Dr. Dorcas E. McCoy
Dean, School of Social Sciences
