About Counseling Services
Mission Statement
The mission of the Bethune-Cookman University Counseling Center is to provide learning opportunities for students to gain better knowledge of self in order to enhance their relationships with peers and facilitate their growth to benefit our community and the larger society. As the provider of mental health services to the student population, the staff of the counseling center is guided by the highest professional and ethical standards of the profession and is dedicated to providing quality services.
Services Provided
University life can be challenging and is often stressful. Students experience those challenges in a number of different ways: difficulties adjusting to college, confusion in deciding on a major or career path, struggles in relationships, making friends or getting along with a roommate. Many students feel anxious, depressed, confused, or overwhelmed at some point during their college experience and need help dealing with feelings and problems that seem beyond their control. Personal counseling can assist students to adjust to these challenges.
Psycho-educational clinics are available for presentation in residential halls throughout the semester to assist students and help them learn effective ways to resolve conflict, control impulse, manage anger, cope with test anxiety and so on. Specifically, services include:
- personal counseling
- group counseling
- recognizing anxiety and depression
- suicide prevention techniques
- reducing test anxiety
- impulse control
- avoiding substance abuse
- anger management
These are offered throughout the year for presentation to campus organizations or in classroom/ residential settings upon request.
Counseling is a process that can help people identify more effective strategies both to cope with difficult situations and to achieve their goals.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is an essential aspect of the counseling relationship therefore, counseling records are separate from B-CU records which prevents the counseling staff from discussing the student’s counseling in any way without written permission from the student.
Limits of Confidentiality
Confidentiality can be breached if a student poses a threat to self or others.
Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in the group setting.
