Welcome. How may we serve you?

International Student Services

Welcome to Bethune-Cookman University. The Office of International Student Services has merged with the Office of Multicultural Programs. Our new name is Multicultural and International Program Services (M.I.P.S.), located in the Center for Civic Engagement.

Now that you have completed the admissions process, this office will assist you throughout your matriculation starting with the Student Exchange Visitors Information System (S.E.V.I.S.) registration at the beginning of each semester. This is a requirement set-forth by of the United States Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  Other services provided by this office include:

  • Providing health insurance coverage at cost to you
  • Federal, State and Local laws (Drivers License)
  • Alerts and updates (Maintaining status)
  • Monitoring your academic progress towards graduation (I-20 deadlines)
  • Providing assistance with employment (CPT, OPT, Social Security Numbers)
  • Departure/re-entry issues (Travel issues)

What is CPT? Curricular Practical Training

Curricular Practical Training is an integral part of an established curriculum; an Internship, cooperative education, field experience, alternative work study or practicum required for degree completion; offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the institution.  CPT is part time for one or two semesters only, starting one week after the semester began and ending one week prior to the semesters end.

What is OPT? Optional Practical Training

Optional Practical Training is temporary employment authorization that is related to an F-1 student’s academic program.  This employment cannot be used to any course credit/completion. There is a fee accessed for this work permit, therefore the student has the option to apply for it or not.  OPT is awarded at the completion of each level of degree study.  The application process takes approximately three months (120) for both initial applications and renewals.  If applying for OPT based on graduation, the OPT application must be submitted to USCIS before the official completion (90 to 45 days prior to the graduation date).
