Bethune-Cookman University is proud to announce its sponsorship of WPBT Channel 2’s African-American History Month programming. WPBT is the primary public television station in South Florida, reaching viewers in seven counties including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. As part of the sponsorship, a short promotional video about Bethune-Cookman University will be broadcast before and after each of the station’s African-American History Month programs. The video features photos of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune along with pictures of campus life today. The narration for the spots reads: “Bethune-Cookman University. Founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904. Sustaining her legacy of faith, scholarship and service today. Offering baccalaureate degrees in 37 majors and a master’s degree program in transformative leadership.” “We are proud to support the high-quality programming that WPBT will feature during African-American History Month,” noted B-CU President Trudie Kibbe Reed. “Bethune-Cookman University’s rich history and that of our founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune are important parts of our national story. As we celebrate African-American History month, we as an institution have a responsibility to help inform the broader community about African-American heritage, culture and contributions.” Bethune-Cookman University’s support helps WPBT Channel 2 broadcast programs including: • African American Lives 2: Henry Louis Gates Jr. guides high-profile individuals including Maya Angelou, Morgan Freeman, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Tom Joyner and Tina Turner on a journey to discover their ancestry. • Come Walk in My Shoes: an award-winning documentary following the Honorable John Lewis on an emotional pilgrimage to the churches, parks and bridges where young people played a pivotal role in the struggle for equality and voting rights. • Red Tail Reborn: a film telling the story of the Tukegee Airmen, the first black fighter pilots who fought in World War II.
